NUBS Minutes: 3-15-18 Meeting

Home Brew Evaluation is a GO: The meeting began last week with an early tasting and evaluation table in the front of the store hosted by Tyler Roloff. This table is set to become an ongoing feature at future meetings. Evaluation of beers is open to all interested in exploring judging and evaluation of home brew.
Welcome New/Returning Members: Welcome to new member Kelly BeLow and returning member Jim Buckman. Thanks for joining up!
Kings and Convicts Happenings: It’s nearly time to celebrate our collaboration with Kings and Convicts! The release of the taproom beer will be at the brewery on Saturday, April 7th starting at 1:00pm. In addition, the commercially released beer will be available for purchase: $12.50/four-pack or $75.00/case. 100% of proceeds from both beers will go to the Benny’s World charity.
In anticipation of this event, there will be a canning session at Kings and Convicts, and we need your help! Those interested in an opportunity to package beer at an actual brewery (and have a couple of beers afterwards for good measure) should contact Zach Gelfand for the date and time of the Stew’s Brew canning.
Winners’ Circle: ‘Tis the season for homebrew competitions, and NUBS brewers have been busy entering beers and winning hardware.Trevor Patric placed third in the American Ales category at this year’s BABBLE Brew-Off with his Fireside Nut Brown Ale. Dan Berger also took third at the Brew-Off in the IPA category with his Floodwaters Black RyePA. Andrew Wyshnytzky took second at the Drunk Monk competition in the Specialty Cider/Perry category with his Pirate Cider.
And the winner of the coveted NUBS “Beer of the Month” goes to Jerry Reid for his Rye Barrel Aged Stout. Congratulations to all!
Club Collaboration: Trevor reported on a recent meeting between himself and the presidents of Club Wort, Fermenters Local 35 and BABBLE regarding inter-club collaborative events. These events included an equipment Swap Meet at Perfect, an All-Club Potluck this August, and a Group Grain/equipment buy. Nothing is set in stone yet. Details are forthcoming soon.

April Event: R’Noggin in Kenosha, WI has gotten back to us with a proposal for a “Brew School” event on a topic of our choosing including two beers, and a 13oz snifter to take home for a per/member cost of $25. Date, transportation, and other details are still to come. UPDATE: Event details here.
June Event: Light the Lamp Brewery has gotten back to us regarding a possible preview of their new tap room and brewery space in Grayslake. The owners are incredibly busy at the moment and would like to meet together to discuss particulars before discussing details with the board. More details should be forthcoming in the last week of March/first week in April.
August/October Event: Both Temperance Beer Co. and Sketchbook Brewing Co. in Evanston, IL have expressed interest in hosting the club for a future event. Right now Dan is in the process of coordinating the visits for a broader tour of the Evanston brewing scene between Sketchbook, Temperance, and dinner and a tour at Smylie Brothers Brewing Co. Access to and from Evanston would likely be by train via the Lake Bluff Metra station. Details to follow at a later date.
September Event: We are currently gauging interest in a weekend trip to the Grand Rapids, MI area for a combination tour/hop evaluation tasting of Great Lakes Hops in Zealand, MI and the Grand Rapids brewing scene. Details are pending based on interest from the club. email Dan at dan.berger.2@gmail.com if you are interested.
